NORTHLAND NL005 has been granted the WHO International Nonproprietary Name (INN).
The international non-proprietary name (INN)—the generic English name—for the active protein ingredient “recombinant human thymosin β4,” which is part of NL005, our company’s Class 1 novel biological drug independently developed by us, has been officially approved at the 77th World Health Organization (WHO) International Nonproprietary Name (INN) Naming Conference held in January 2024. The approved name is “gletimbetasin.” In April 2025, WHO formally included it in the “International Nonproprietary Names Recommended List, 93rd Edition.”
INN is the abbreviation for International Nonproprietary Names, an international nomenclature system developed by the World Health Organization (WHO). In collaboration with national expert committees on pharmaceutical terminology, the WHO has established a unique, globally recognized name for each active substance marketed as a pharmaceutical product. The purpose of this system is to eliminate confusion in medication use caused by differences in drug names, thereby facilitating the international circulation, regulation, and academic exchange of pharmaceutical products. In China, innovative drugs can have three types of names: the English International Nonproprietary Name (INN), the Chinese generic name, and the brand name. The INN of a drug’s active ingredient is a prerequisite for obtaining its Chinese generic name. Applications for approval of generic drug names are submitted concurrently with applications for new drug marketing authorization and are reviewed and approved by the Chinese Pharmacopoeia Committee according to legally prescribed naming principles. The determination of the INN lays the foundation for subsequent approval of generic names, which in turn promotes the global sales and marketing of the drug after it is launched and helps establish independent brands for both companies and their products.
NL005 is a Class 1 recombinant protein therapeutic biologic developed independently by our company. It has been successively included in the “Major New Drug Development” special programs during China’s 11th, 12th, and 13th Five-Year Plans and has received the “China Patent Excellence Award.” Scientific research has shown that NL005 possesses multiple biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, pro-angiogenic, anti-apoptotic, and anti-fibrotic effects, making it suitable for the repair of organ and tissue injuries. Based on its unique material characteristics, our company has developed indications such as ischemia-reperfusion injury following acute myocardial infarction and neurotrophic keratitis. Among these, the clinical trial for ischemia-reperfusion injury following acute myocardial infarction, led by Fuwai Hospital, is currently in Phase II. Our company looks forward to providing a new clinical treatment option for reperfusion injury associated with acute myocardial infarction.
